Both Prime Ministers and Presidents are elected but by different means. A President is usually elected directly by the general public. A Prime Minister, under a commonwealth government, must first be elected as a Member of Parliament in their own federal seat by the people living in that seat and then the party that they represent votes them as leader of that party. If the party happens to be the one in power, the leader is the Prime Minister.
The head of state in a republic is usually a President, the head of state in the Commonwealth is the Monarch of Great Britain represented in the other countries by the Governor General. Neither the Monarch nor the Governor General are elected but the Governor General is appointed by the monarch on the recommendation of the Prime Minister.
Edit: The Monarch and the Governor General have limited powers and are bound by the constitution of that country. It is the party in power that makes the major decisions affecting the country.

I think it's just a different word for the same thing, depending on the country.
The US and some other countries call their leader a president, while Britain and countries that are, or used to be commonwealths of Britain, like Canada and Australia, call their leader a prime minister.

The difference between a prime minister and a president, in less than ten words, is that presidents are elected by the people, prime ministers aren't. If you want to be a president, you have to campaign to the people. If you want to be a prime minister, on the other hand, you have to campaign to your fellow politicians.
