Emo is a somewhat ambiguous, controversial slang term most frequently used to describe a fashion or subculture which is usually defined to have its roots in punk fashion and subculture, as well as some attributes of gothic fashion and subculture. Emo fashion is usually defined to have roots in punk fashion as well as gothic fashion. By almost all current definitions, emo clothing is characterized by tight jeans on males and females alike, long fringe (bangs) often brushed to one side of the face, dyed black, straightened hair, tight t-shirts which often bear the names of rock bands, studded belts, belt buckles, Chuck Taylor All-Stars, skate shoes, or other black shoes—often old and beaten up—and thick, black-rimmed glasses. When referring to a person's personality and attitude, most definitions of emo hold that an "emo person" is candid about their emotions, sensitive, shy, introverted, broken-hearted, glum, and often quiet. Emo personality is also often connected with writing poetry, which addresses confusion, depression, loneliness, and anger, all resulting from the world's inability to understand the author. Emo poetry uses a combination of any of: a highly emotional tone, stream of consciousness writing, a simple (ABAB) or nonexistent rhyme scheme, references to the flesh, especially the heart, heavy use of dark or depressing adjectives, concern over the mutability of time and/or love, and disregard for punctuation, grammar, and/or spelling. Themes such as life is pain are common. Some definitions of emo hold that typical "emo persons" are likely to inflict self-injury, most often by means of cutting, burning, or otherwise mutilating themselves. Some assert that it is cool within the emo subculture to pretend to be suicidal and self-harm, or that participants self-harm purely for personal enjoyment.

RE:
What the hell is an EMO person anyway? What does EMO mean exactly?

Emo is short for Emotional.

I think an Emo person is one that is just very emotional in the way they deal with situations. They go to the extremes of the feelings scale.

Example: A non-emo person gets a D on a test and is bummed out for a while but just forgets about it while and emo person would see the D and they would probably worry about the effect it's going to have on their final grade, cry and lose sleep over it and just think about it for days going into a state of almost depression.
They take a feeling and multiply the reaction by 10.

I get what you're saying, but its not that easy. How do you propose people be who they are? How do they know who they are? And more importantly, WHY are they who they are? We are who we are BECAUSE of society. Like the person above me said- you wear clothes because its the norm in this society. Your views are almost definitely influenced HEAVILY by society. Appearance is the same. I used to be all caught up in this "be yourself" BS, but I think the majority of the people in the world ARE being themselves, even if somewhat subdued around those they don't know. For instance, people choose clothes on the basis of what appeals to them and what THEY think looks cool. One person likes something, and another person doesn't, yet the first person wears it anyways. Just because a large number of other people- discounting the one in the example- wear similar clothes doesn't mean he/she likes them any less. Trying to be different just to be different is fun, but often it's a load of crap. Honestly, it's best if we don't even worry about stereotypes. I try not to stereotype others, and I don't stereotype myself, because I realize there's more to me than just the way I dress or the way I act, and the same goes for the dumb, blonde cheerleaders, the "individual" punks, the goths and emo kids, and the big, stupid jocks. You say they aren't being themselves, but do you really know their selves so well that you can make that judgement? I'm all for individuality, but being an individual doesn't mean changing so you're different than others, and it's not all about appearances. Nobody can tell anyone else that they aren't "being themselves", because how the hell do they know?

EMO means EMOtional. An Emo person is kinda like goth, but instead of being obsessed with darkness and death, they're just kinda depressed.
