You need to run anti-virus software at all times. The best is NOD32, but it's not free. If you want a free anti-virus I recommend in this order (install only one):

1. AVG Free
a. A simple interface
b. Can detect about 82.82% of viruses
Cons: low virus detection

2. Avast!
a. Real-time protection
b. It has an option to delete a virus once found
c. Can detect about 87.46% of viruses.
Cons: Too many icons and confusing user interface

3. Avira AntiVir
a. It can detect malware better than Avast and AVG
b. It's cute umbrella icon
c. Can detect about 94.26% of viruses
Cons: A very sluggish update

You're taking an awful chance going online with antivirus protection. McAfee and Norton are about equal, although I prefer Norton. Watch the ads in the Sunday paper. I picked up a 3-license Norton 2007 for $9.99 after rebates. It was a weekend special and I received my rebate from Symantec in two weeks.

OK, Kapersky is rated #1 in this pcworld review. mcafee #2
norton #2 in another. bitdefender was rated #1 and in another #3. those you have to pay.
freeware are good at blocking immediate attacks, but there ratings decrease on older viruses.
AVG is good; computer geeks love it
Avast might be better. but if your running Vista not compatible
i used Mcaffee 90 day trial. i have Norton right now. ani used AVG and Avast at one ppoint, not together. And Zone Alarm it has a great firewall but thats it. I liked Mcaffee the best,

I'm surprised your ISP (Internet Service Provider) hasn't kicked you off yet.

There are many good (bought ot free) applications, you have to decide for yourself, just do it NOW.

I like Norton AntiVirus (purchased).

For freebies, I like AVAST or one like SpyBot - Search and Destroy), both great.
