Any Hardware store in your neighborhood should have just what youi're looking for. Most places you can buy just the amount you need.

If you need many bits and can not afford to buy them, try to find a company making or using chain in your area, often the cut of ends that are too short for use get sold for scrap iron, you might be able to get some free or for scrap price.
Specially if they would be proud to have contributed to your art.
(Take photos of other work you have done and/or sketches of what you want to do now.)

You might want to try MSC Industrial Supply. They supply the chain at the plant I work at. Their web site is... http://www1.mscdirect.com/cgi/nnsrhm
just put chain in the search box at the top. They sell chain by the foot.
I just looked, and they have chain link diameters of up to 1"...a foot of that wouldn't give you more than 3 or 4 links. The advantages to using new chain is that it would be clean, and therefore easier to work with.

Lowe's carries lengths of chain in different styles. They have them on spools, and you can choose the length you need. They carry different materials, so you might call them first and be sure that they have exactly what you need. If you're like me, any excuse for a trip to Lowe's is a good thing.
