Personification of inanimate objects. Kids LOVE to do that, and love any story that does it as well. Good themes are things that everyday kids can relate to, like going to the library, feeling afraid/shy in a new environment or around new people, playing fair/cheating, celebrating a birthday or other holiday, being sick and getting better, and having a new baby brother or sister (or even a new puppy or kitten).
Parents like books that kids find entertaining but that also incorporate an important moral lesson - I'd stay away from the age-old fairy tales with mythical creatures.

Maybe you can turn a favorite toy or toys you played with as a kid into a book character and write of their adventures. My sister's and I had these animal puppets and I wrote a now never published kids book (and sadly never going to be published book since all the pages have now been destroyed) that centered around my panda puppet and how he met the others (all became actual animals) and how they toured the world just to see the sights.

A good theme is a child's verison of Homer's Odessey. The child travels in an imaginary world having adventures and in the end wakes up in his bedroom. It was all a dream and he is safe and sound, but with the full memory of what happened he is now wiser and kinder.

Manners! I remember in the Highlights for Children magazines that I received as a child--the stories that really stuck out for me were "Goofus and Gallant". It was all about manners, and always had a very resonating theme. Can't get enough of that these days!

I think kids love to be encouraged about things they want to do in life. However most of the time parents tell them how to live their lives and kid just go along. I know kids who've never liked to play the piano but took lessons for years just to please their parents.. I think children would like to read a book that shows them how important it is to speak out, something encouraging, showing them that it is not a bad thing to want different things in life.

You can borrow mine-
It's about a certain animal who lives with the circus but isn't happy and wants to run away from the circus. It's a play on the old times when kids weren't happy and they wanted to run away to the circus.
