can changing the plugs in a 86 jimmy mess up the timing it ran good until i changed plugs wires in right?

wires are on right plugs and plugs have been gaped right after i changed them it will idel and backfire every once in a while

The computer should handle the timing. Did you get the plug wires on correct? and tight? Are you sure that you have the firing order right? Replacing the plugs and wires should not normally have given you any problems. Do you have any error codes in the computer. Any check engine light?

It might be the type of plug you installed. Platinum and Iridium plugs might effect the performance. Ac delco and champion work well but autolite might cause problems. Hope this helps.
