2 strokes do generally generate more power with less weight. However, a two-banger generally doesn't last as long as a 4 stroke. They run a lot hotter, so as a result of constant expansion and contraction from general use, are more likely to require head adjustment and replacement. Also, you have to mix (or at least add) two stroke oil to the fuel, which increases operating costs. 2 strokes also generally get about 10-15 percent less fuel mileage. So, if you are running a long distance or for a long time, the 4 stroke has an advantage. If you are running in an area where you may ride dry for a long time, then have a water crossing (like an enduro), the hotter running 2 stroke has a greater potential for motor damage when the engine is rapidly cooled by contact with water. And 4 strokes don't make everything smell like a chainsaw.

Wow, what is up with the younger generation. 2 strokes do not run hotter than 4 strokes. You can put you hand on the muffler of a two stroke while it is running. A 4 stroke pipe literally glows red hot.

4 strokes have taken over motocross but only because of a huge displacement advantage- 250cc vs 450cc.

4 strokes are MUCH louder than 2 strokes. And the sound of a 2 stroke doesn't carry nearly as far. You can hear a 250 4 stroke way down at the end of the track.

Go to a local dealer and ask for an estimate on rebuilding a 4 stroke engine. Then ask them how much to rebuild a 2 stroke. It will be a quarter as much. Don't tell me 4 strokes are cheaper than 2 strokes.

Protect the environment? Give me a break. Dirt bikes have tiny engines compared to cars and trucks, and they are only operated for a couple hours a week. You must be nuts to think it's tiny emissions output has any impact on the atmosphere.

4 strokes are not faster than 2 strokes,
> its a fact that both motors with the SAME displacement are not created equal...........because the 2 stroke achieves a power stroke twice as frequent as a four stroke.
> 4 strokes are winning the races because they can only compete with half the displacement..125 2 stroke races the 250 four stroke, the 250 2 stroke races the 450 four stroke. if a 500 2 stroke raced a 450 4 stroke, the 4 stroke would loose.
>4 strokes have a nice smooth power band and are easy to ride, however the 2 stroke is lighter and although the power stroke occurs twice as often it doesnt produce twice as much power.
>if racing went by displacement everyone would ride 2 strokes

A two stroke is defiantly not better than a four. A two stroke has better acceleration and hits the RPM's faster. A four stroke is more spread out with its power and top speed is better. Such as KTM they compare their SX 150 (two stroke) to a SXF 250 (four stroke). A RMZ 450 would burn a RM 250 any day any time.

As the previous answerer indicated, two strokes are illegal in some States; that's because they are less fuel efficient and more polluting (since they must have oil mixed with the gas).

They are also more noisy (more "ring ding") than an equivalent four stroke, and if you accidentally mix two little or two much oil, you'll create more expensive engine repair "noises". Too much will reduce the ability to burn gasoline effectively, and too little will not keep the engine lubricated.

As for power and speed? It is true that SOME two strokes would out-accelerate their four stroke counterparts, but with similar gearing, I don't believe that is true any longer.

Tell your cousin that two strokes are more hassle than they're worth. Good luck!

2 strokes USE to be better, but in this age of new bikes and quads, 4 strokes are superior! FOR SURE MAN. 2 strokes are illegal in some states and company's are stopping making them, eventually everything will be 4 stroke. more power, more efficiency. mmkay? Believe me i know what im talkin about. if your talkin about a old model of 2 stroke vs 4 stroke, 2 stroke will accelerate faster and probably be faster. but now, companies dont even make 2 strokes really , they focus on 4 strokes, 2 strokes are the past.

Everyone has made valid points, buy two strokes are initially less expensive to build, plain and simple. Less complex with fewer parts to machine and assemble equals less cost.

2 strokes SUCK. They blow up and leave you stranded. 4 stroke will at least limp home before dying.
