If your traffic is on the suspect list, then it most likely is being monitored. To avoid being monitored, you would have to be out of our jurisdiction. The problem is, ALL Internet traffic is under the control of the USA. We maintain the computers that run the Internet, which has been a thorn in the side of other countries. Regardless of those concerns and a call for at least a partnership for Internet control, the USA holds that control, right now. Since email is a function of the Internet, the government has control, and monitor capability.
To get away from the risk of being monitored, person to person, direct contact is about the only way to not be monitored.

The U.S. Government will not check your e-mail unless you are under suspicion or communicating with someone who is in a known terrorist country or who is suspected of wrongdoing. You should have learned a long time ago not to put anything in writing that you would not want published on the front page of the newspaper.

If you are not doing anything wrong, what difference does it make if your e-mail is checked? As far as I'm concerned, if it will prevent a terrorist attack in the U.S., the government can read my mail and listen in on my phone calls.

You will have to encrypt your e-mails if you want to make sure no one out there will read them.
