I think it was leather boots. They either made it themselves or a person who makes shoes would go around annually and make some for them. In exchange, they would trade items and let the person stay in their house and eat their food until the boots were done.

They wore shoes with square heels and a strap across that were usually made of satin for evening. They looked something like a mary jane.
