Here is another way of looking at it that gives the answer directly without any subtracion of dollars.

$35.99 is the full price (100%)

Now a 30% discount is another way of saying you pay 70% of the original price (100% - 30%) so the reduced sales price is:

0.70 x 35.99 = $ 25.19

Now if we consider this new price to be 100% of the sales price and we can take another 15% off this price then we will pay 85% of the sales price (100% - 15% = 85%) so the final price is:

0.85 x 25.19 = $ 21.41

Give or take a penny.

I wouldn't buy pants that were so cheap in the first place. Find me a pair of $60 pants for $35.99 and I'll think about it.

to solve this

35.99 x .30=10.797

so subtract 10.79 from 35.99 you wil get
25.20
to take 15% off 2,20

multiply 25.20 by .15 getting 3.78(15% of 25.20)
so subtract 25.20 and 3.78 to get 21.42
