Heck No! I do not think its unrealistic at all. In fact, I think its rather courageous. Have you watched *Ice Truckers*? Those guys have some cajones, I'll tell ya that! Driving out on that ice - with full loads? Holy cow - thats some sh*t right there!
When I was younger, I too, dreamed of being an over the rode trucker - it came from all the traveling we did when I was growing up - I LOVED being on the road.
I grew up though, had kids and spend my life driving kids to and fro - its a truly thankless - yet necessary job - and sometimes I get so very tired of it....
Go for it!

At 42, it's not unrealistic. But I wouldn't bet the farm on your wanting to do it for more than 10 or 15 years. The hours can be hell, which can wreak havoc with your ability to sleep -- and therefore to continue driving. My neighbor usually leaves for work anywhere between 2:30 and 4:30 in the morning most days. There are a lot of older guys out there who are handling it well, but it's really a young man's game.

Heck, no! At 43, I still do! I once took the correspondence part of the course, and scored 96.4%! I had to get my kids raised, and now I have cats and fish to take care of, but someday I won't have anyone depending on me, then I just might do it! Maybe then I'll get a dog for company. Maybe a big one for protection, too!
I already have a Class B CDL license. I used to drive a city bus. It's the same test, mostly, so I know I can do it. It's not hard. If you can drive a car, you can drive a rig. The pay isn't bad, either!
If it's something you're interested in, check out truck driving schools near you, compare costs. When you find one you like, check them out with the Better Business Bureau, to make sure they're legit. Apply for financial aid, then just go for it! As long as you're healthy enough to pass the DOT Physical (just a general check for vision, hearing, reflexes, range of motion, etc.), and can handle long hours of driving, you're all set!
Lots of people our age are switching careers, anyway. Some people spend 20+ years in a career, then decide to go and do something else. Then there are those like me, who still haven't decided what they want to be when they grow up! LOL!
You have to work until you're 70 to collect full Social Security benefits (for what they're worth), so you might as well spend your "Golden Years" working at something you like, or can at least stand! Good luck!

Absolutely not! Go learn how to drive, earn your CDL, and hit the road.
When I worked at the library, some of the happiest people I knew where truckers who were older. A lot of them left 9-5 jobs for the freedom of driving. Yes, there are parts that aren't fun, like having to chain up during a snow storm to get over Donner's Pass in the middle of winter, or having to wait around for a load out in the middle of nowhere, but they enjoy the job so much they don't mind the inconvenient parts.
There was a divorced woman in her late 50s who I knew quite well. She was a legal secretary with a big fat salary when she decided to leave it and start driving team with her then husband. The husband eventually left the picture, but the driving did not. She said it's the most marvelous and wonderful decision she's ever made. Her husband actually owned his own tractor, and they bought another one while they were married, so he gave that one to her when they divorced (they are still really good friends, and drive in convoy whenever possible). She said she plans to drive until she gets too old, or until her grandkids present her with great-grandkids. She said if the great-grandbabies start rolling in, she'll retire so she can tend them during the day. But until that day, she'll be on the road, seeing the US, and talking on the CB.
Go for it!!

I'll be 42 in less than 3 weeks. Let's put this spin on it... It's unrealistic for you WANT to drive CDL *only if* it's unrealistic for me to WANT to have one more child.
There's a world of difference between what we may want and what we actually do. ;oD
