Do they NEED a filter??? I would say No!
But if you are using them as a food source and will keep a lot of them together, then a sponge filter won't hurt to have in their tank. If you add a sponge filter, they will converge on it (easier for them to eat detrius) and make it easier for you to catch and see them.

they are very hardy, yet definite i think of they do elect a filter out. I had them for approximately 5 months devoid of heater and that they did effective, besides the undeniable fact that I had a splash bit a difficulty with my filter out some days in the past and interior of two days of unfiltered water my shrimp refused to eat and swam around the floor of the water in basic terms, unwilling to the touch the backside. see you later as a results of fact the present isn't too stable on your filter out you will no longer elect a pre-filter out sponge, i've got seen my adult adult males amazing around without put off on the intake eating off of it.

No, if you really wanted to, you could plop some in a fish bowl with some live plants and watch them eat the microscopic organisms that grow. Shrimp are really the best use of a fishbowl (thank you Ghappy).
