There are a number of snakes that could fit that description. Sounds like a black rat snake.

since you have not said it had rattles on it, I can assume you know it not to be a diamondback rattler

my guess, just based on what you are saying ,that it is a black rat snake. if you poke it with a stick, it will "wrinkle up" really badly.

Black rat snakes are black with silver/gray underbellies and some have silver markings on their bodies. They are non poisonous and kill their prey by constriction.

Best to leave nature alone though...that snake is taking care of keeping all the poisonous ones out of your yard

Diamond shaped heads are poisonous snakes- stay away.
