Okay here we go.
I was recently given a computer (desktop) for my daughter. It seems to be pretty nice. It has XP pro on it, and seems to run quicker than my newer one. But there is no place to hook up DSL in the back. There are 2 places for a regular phone line and that is it. I have DSL in my front room for my computer. What do I need to get her on the net? And it needs to be as cheap as it can be, I'm a fulltime student and single mother, so I am broke! I was wanting to know if it would work by putting an ethernet card in her computer and just hooking up another DSL modem (which I have) in her room connected to her computer? Someone please help me. She is a great kid and I promised I would figure this out for her. Thank you in advance for any help!

let me make some assumptions first...
1>you have a DSL connection that requires username and password...
2>u have two computers....(including ur daughter's)
2.1>ur daughter's computer doesnt have a ethernet port..
3>u want to share files between them...
4>also share the internet connection,so u can access internet on both computers..
5>u dont have a router..only the DSL modem..with one usb,one ethernet.
if some of the above are true then follow the steps..
first get a ethernet card for ur daughter's pc then follow the steps, after u installed the ethernet card
1>u will need a Crossover cable(cat-5),easily available in the market..it looks just like an ordinary ethernet cable...
2>configure one of your computers to access the net with USB mode of DSL cable..(any one)
3>connect both the computers with the CAT-5 cable..
4>first run the new connection wizard in the computer with the internet access...dont run simultaneously..on both..
4.1>then select "set up home and office network">>finish
4.2>another wizard will pop up>>>next>>next>>select the first option..ie" this computer connects directly to the internet...others connect through this computer...""">>> next
4.3>select ur internet connection from the list(ppope)>>next
4.4>>give comp name(unique)>>next>>give a workgroup name>>next
4.5>turn on file sharing>> next >> next>>wait for the wizard to finsh
4.6>>then select "just finish the wizard">> exit.
then go to the other computer..and run new connection wizard.
follow steps 1-4.1 above
then at 4.2..select the second option instead of the first..
ie>"this comp...conects through other computer..
then 4.3>give computer name different from first computer..>>>next>>give workgroup name(same as first)>>next>>
turn on file sharing>>>next >>next>>wait for the wizard to finish>>
then select>>>just finish the wizard>>exit
then reboot both the computers......
this should do it...

You have two questions here. 1. What do you need to get the new desktop on the net. Are you absolutely sure that there are "2 places to hook a regular phone line." If one is larger than the other, then that most likely is an Ethernet port and you could connect Ethernet from a DSL modem to it. If both are phone connections, you'll need an Ethernet card or an Ethernet USB adapter. However the answer to your second question "wanting to know if it would work by...hooking up another DSL modem..." is no...one DSL account one DSL modem only. You would need to plug your existing DSL modem (via its Ethernet cable) into a router with two or more ports, then directly connect both computers to the router via Ethernet cables, or plug your DSL Ethernet cable into a wireless router. Then for your new computer buy a wireless card rather than a normal Ethernet card and you'll be connected wirelessly.
Ebay is a good source of inexpensive hardware. You'll find what's known as an 80211B wireless router is pretty inexpensive, and while the slowest wireless standard, it should be plenty fast enough to connect and share a DSL account. Also, if you buy an 80211B wireless card for your computer that should be pretty inexpensive also.

You will need to install an Ethernet card in the pc, but you would have to check with your ISP to determine if they will allow you to use a modem that is already in your possession. They may not, and if they do, then that may result in another charge for another "line" so to speak even though you did not purchase the modem from them. Check with them on that issue to determine how that works out.
Now you may also install the Ethernet card into her computer and install a router in your home so that both of you are able to use the Internet on your computers. If the computer is in her room and the DSL modem in another location, you may want to consider purchasing a router and a wireless card for her computer so that you do not have to run cables all over your home. You can get an internal wireless card or a USB wireless card that would connect on the outside of the computer and allow you to not have to open the case. You may also check your computer to determine if there is a wireless card installed on it already (right-click My Computer, then click Properties, Hardware, then Device Manager. Go to Network Adapters, and click the plus sign to make it a minus. If there is a wireless adapter installed, it will be listed there). If you have a wireless card on your pc, then you can move the DSL modem into her room, purchase an Ethernet card to install in her computer, and set your computer up for a wireless connection with the router.
You can go to Wal-mart, Best Buy or a place like that to purchase what you need.
Basic home routers typically range between $40-60
Ethernet cards typically range between $30-$60
Wireless card (internal/USB) typically range between $30-60

Yes, it sounds like the computer your daughter will use needs an Ethernet card.
If your modem is not a wireless one - the best way to approach this is to buy a router (wireless) - available at Walmart for around $60. You can not use two modems.
You can solve the Ethernet card problem by getting a USB wireless one. Tigerdirect.com has them cheap. For less than a hundred bucks you can be in business.

you will could start up with a router (approximately $40-50). it extremely is a field that connects on your DSL modem and has quite a few ports for cables so as that assorted desktops could be linked to it. in the adventure that your daughter's room is close adequate, you purely run a cable from the router to her room. If working a cable isn't functional, then evaluate a on the spot router (in many situations approximately $10 greater then commonplace router). comparable as a prevalent router different than is likewise broadcast a on the spot radio sign. Has somewhat a extensive type approximately a hundred-a hundred and fifty ft. you will could function a on the spot card on your daughter's computer than can obtain the sign (approximately $40-50). as quickly as further, bypass to the administration panel and run the on the spot community Wizard to connect her computer to the on the spot sign.

Ya your going to need to buy an Ethernet card.Do not hook up another modem it will scramble the signal with the other box(basically there going to "fight" to get a signal, and neither of them are going to have a signal).
Another solotion is that some modems have an option of hooking up a computer via USB.So you can do that but remember don't have more than 1 modem on at once.

You can also buy a USB adapter for wireless access instead of the ethernet card. It's a device that plugs into her USB port.
