Same for an MP3 device:- will I use more of my stored rechargeable power if I like to listen to my music loud?

It depends on the design of the final amplifier stages. For a linear class A amplifier, power drain is nearly independent of volume. This would likely be true for a component stereo. The subwoofer would be more likely to use more power at higher volume.

A portable MP3 player likely uses tricks to reduce power consumption, so it is likely to use more power at higher volume. Even so, it might not be enough difference to be noticeable.
