I'm trying to get into the acting business, my dad told me if I want to do this, I must start at the bottom. I want to work around film sets and I live near San Francisco.

How odd I answered the same question based on the same reasoning for someone else tonight==find out what films are being made in the area and where the production office is, then take your resume and headshot to the production office and tell them you would like to work as an extra and /or as a production assistant of some kind on the film. Leave your stuff and hope for a call back.

Your best bet is to attend a college for the creative and performing arts in a city that has a film industry (NY, L.A., Toronto, etc). I have a relative that works in the film industry (but in a different part of the industry). He attended the college in the link below. Part of a college's curriculum in this field is to have guest speakers come in from the industry to provide valuable advice and tips on how to get started.
