They aren't always. People get bitten, rammed and sexually assualted by dolphins all the time.

google "attacked by a dolphin" and I think you will get the picture.

They are smart creatures and don't want to be penned up in some small swimming pool. Just like a dog on a chain, they can get mean.

It seems that some dolphins find humans interesting and entertaining. Sometimes they join surfers in the waves. Sometimes they push stranded people on a life raft to a boat or shore. I imagine that they have a kind of instinct to help, just as humans do, and they have enough intelligence to know humans can't stay in the water forever like they can. Some humans also will rescue wild animals that are in distress. I don't suppose that all dolphins are people-lovers, any more than all people are animal-lovers.

The same reason cats and dogs are. They're mammals just like them. I once stood by an unattended pool with a dolphin at six flags Magic Mountain. All of a sudden this dolphin flew up in front of me and was squawking or laughing and kept patting my waist with it's fins like it was giving me a dolpin hug. Maybe I looked like it's trainer or something, but that was definitely a show of affection.

That's a myth. They can be trained, but are not ordinarily interested in being "nice" to people. If you've visited Sea World and had a dolphin "kiss" you, did you not notice it was given something to eat immediately afterwards? It was performing for that bit of food, not because it gave a rip about you.

Dolphins are intelligent and they probably have a great sense of humor. When they are being nice to humans, they are probably actually making fun of us. They are probably saying to each other "Look at that poor human trying to swim with those goofy looking flippers." Any animal that can see itself in a mirror and actually make up new tricks on their own, can make up jokes.

"Dolphins are considered to be amongst the most intelligent of animals and their often friendly appearance and seemingly playful attitude have made them popular in human culture."
