I'm gonna take a shot in the dark on this..
If he can't hear sounds, he didn't remove a file, he removed a device.

to fix:
right click on "my computer" and select properties

you should see a tab called "Hardware" - click it.
click the button labeled "Device Manager"
a screen comes up listing all the devices on the computer.
right click on "computer" and select "scan for hardware changes"
it should detect and reinstall your friend's sound card.

if that doesn't work, post the model number of the dell computer and we'll see what can be done.

If this friend has the disks that came with computer they can put in the dell resource cd it will tell you what drivers are needed with check marks just reinstall drivers for the sound card If he does not have this he must go to dell web site and down load drivers http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/index.aspx?c=us
the button that turns on computer has a ring around it on that ring is the model of you computer you can type it in at this web site and then look for the drive for sound card you have
