Fetisov is disappointed at Russia showing. In a Russian publication he stated
a) Canada is too darn good
b) Russia lacks character?

Is he right?

I have now watched 5 of the games and Canada is indeed very good and Russia indeed lacks character. By saying they lack character, I mean they seem unwilling to pay the price to be in the difficult spots on the ice-not willing to park in front of the net, block shots (although one Russian did in the tie) and battle along the walls. Adversely, Canada seems willing to pay the physical price and sacrifice their bodies.

With the 1972 Summit Series, it was really the unknown for Canada and it really confused Canada when the Soviets showed their amazing passing skills in playing keep away. It was amazing how the Soviets would pass their way up the ice and if they didn't like what they saw, they would circle back to their own end, regroup and charge out again, this really confused Canada because they were used to straight forward hockey, not that back pedalling stuff.

It also seems that this 2007 edition is getting outcoached. Canada does have a better roster to help that theory. The game Russia tied was the only game they showed some heart but give it an asterisk because a giant assist goes to the 2 Russian referees that game.

Finally, this tourney was the idea of Tretiak so I wonder if he is re-thinking his idea.

Yes, he is dead on.

Its at least one of the two. At least they looked a bit better in game 7 but only on the scoreboard. Still badly out shot, at one point the shots were about 24 to 5 for Canada yet Russia had a 2-1 lead.
I don't know if Russia lacked character as much as lacking talent or cohesion. What ever it is, they're not the Russians we're used to seeing.

I agree more with B than A. The current Canadian team is very well coached and it shows on the ice. I just don't believe the Russian saw this as anything more than a chance to make some western dollars. The fear of Siberia used to be the big motivator for the Soviets but this group has no fear or pride it seems.

Canada has great programs starting at an early age. Russia and the USA have TEN TIMES (10x) the population and still can't compete. Can you imagine if Canada also had 300 million people. It would be no contest.

I agree with A. B no, Canada just dominates the roster.
