I have a 2002 ford e350 5.4L that wont start. Prior to the problem, the driver said he heard knocking coming from the engine or transmission and then loss of power. The transmission was rebuilt recently. He parked the truck and now it wont start. When trying to start the engine, all it does is the starter will click, click and nothing else. There are times when you could hear the starter relay click click also. I replaced the starter and it still does the same. I jumped the battery thinking it was low in voltage, and it still does the same. I used jumper cables from the battery to the starter with the ignition turned on. All i get was a click click. What could be the problem?

You could have a bad ground causing the started not to be connected good on the ground side. or worse with the knocking noise the engine could be locked up and the starter is clicking cause it can't turn the engine. try putting a wrench on the crank pulley to see if you can turn the engine.

When you removed the old starter motor, was the nose broken on the starter? I've seen the end of the starter missing & jammed in the flywheel. Place a socket on the center of the harmonic balance & try turning the engine. If won't go one then try in opposite direction. Sometimes if something is jammed, either in the flywheel or the timing chain has broken, the engine may turn one way but not the other. If you can not turn in either direction, then remove all the spark plugs & check for coolant in the cylinders. Try turning the engine with the plugs removed. If the engine will not turn, then you will have to pull the engine. Lots of fun on Ford Vans. . .
If the engine turns easily, then try it with the starter. If the starter doesn't work then you may have a faulty/misaligned starter or a relay problem.
