you should definitely talk to your doctor about any exercise, especially if you do not regularly exercise pre-pregnancy.
walking and swimming are suggested for anyone of any fitness level. pregnancy yoga is also a good one.
just as important as exercising is eating habits. "eating for two" isn't really the case... or atleast the other person you are eating for is only the size of a peanut then an apple then a grapefruit etc. only 300 extra calories are needed a day and those need to be calories that count and not an extra piece of cake.
100 grams of protein a day are suggested as well as AT LEAST 30 grams of fiber. and lots of water.

I walk, swim, and even do workouts on DVD (but skip the parts that are not appropriate---you will feel what is not comfortable..trust me!!!) I didn't eat any extra calories, tried to eat tons of fruits & veggies (basically, followed a healthy diet plan) and I think I am doing pretty good. I am am 37 weeks pregnant and have gained 22 pounds. Also, I am retaining TONS of fluids (no wedding ring doesn't fit, and flip flops are the only shoes I can wear...good thing I live in Florida!) so I am hoping it may even be less than a true 22 pound gain. Do NOT get into the mind set that you can eat what you want for 9 months...it will get you too big and make time to exercise moderately consistently.

You do realize that you will gain weight during pregnancy and your body will grow, no matter what you do, right?
If you want to aviod gaining EXCESS weight, the most important thing you can do is eat healthy. Eat whole grains instead of processed grains; get a lot of lean protein; don't take in too much sugar. It's not true that pregnancy is an excuse to eat anything you want! As for exercise, walking, swimming, and prenatal yoga are all very good for you.

Ok, know that you must gain weight during pregnancy, but I do understand your question, that of course, you don't want to gain too much...i would consult with your doctor on how much should your target weight gain be according to weight pre-pregnancy.
But only eating nutritious meals, veggies, fruits, juice and plenty of water, it will not be hard to lose it afterwards....limit your salts and sugars....as far as exercises, I would say light yoga, walking, and swimming.
