You are not depressed when you feel sad for a day or two; you are depressed when you experience a prolonged period of sadness that interferes with your ability to function. Depression occurs because of an imbalance of chemicals in the brain. It is an illness. And it is highly treatable.

Unfortunately, many people do not receive treatment for depression, and thus are at risk for suicide.

If you or have some of these symptoms below, please seek help immediately:


Feeling sad for two or more weeks


Feeling lethargic -- feeling like you have no energy


Unable to concentrate


Sleeping too much or too little


Eating too much or too little


Feeling worthless


Feeling hopeless


Feeling helpless


Feeling negative or pessimisstic


Losing interest in activities that you previously enjoyed


Crying frequently


Withdrawing from others


Neglecting personal appearance


Feeling angry


Feeling guilty


Unable to think clearly


Unable to make decisions

Basically, if "the blues" do not go away after two weeks, you probably have depression. And you need to get treatment. So please make an appointment with a medical doctor and a therapist so you may be properly evaluated. Many people do not think of going to a medical doctor when they are depressed, but it is an important step because there could be a physical problem beside the chemical imbalance that is causing the depression. And please get into therapy. If the therapist believes that you need medication he or she can refer you to someone.

Get help now.

Get treatment now.

Many people who have depression do not get help. So please, do the right thing and make those appointments.

Again, you may need to take medication. So, please leave that option open. People take medication all of the time for a variety of ailments, why should taking medication for depression be any different?

And please understand that when you are depressed that you affect the people around you. So get help for your loved ones as well as yourself. If you need to take medication, then you should do so. You can ask the doctor and therapist all of the questions that you can think of. And you can do your own research. You can seek a second and even a third opinion. But the bottom line is that you need to do what is necessary to get better.

You might believe that you could never become suicidal, but protracted, untreated depression will make almost anyone suicidal, including you. So take action now. If you are depressed, make those appointments immediately.

If finances are holding you back, then look for low-priced clinics in your community. Call 1-800-SUICIDE for referrals.

If you are not depressed but know someone who is, please make sure that he or she receives help. Remember that untreated depression is the number one cause for suicide, so immediate action is required.

It can all be summed up in just one word, Success.
People often stumble through life doing their job, going out meeting friends etc, but the real secret of happy living, healthy living and in fact living itself, is success.
I stumbled upon a 'game' once.
It was called the millionaire in 28 moves game, and the rules seemed kind of silly. The first step was to find or acquire a penny. Then double it. And so on until step 28, you're a millionaire. But the game itself was immensely rewarding.
First, don't start trying to work out how to get to step two when you haven't achieved step one yet, or you'll put yourself off. That first penny is a small success, but it's a success.
Now how are you going to double it. Find a way but don't use any of your own money. Find a way is the challenge. Achieving 2p the success. Then double it.
It is only when you play the game, and treat it only as a game,
something to do in your spare time, NOT in place of your normal everyday things, that you feel the benefits of success, and the satisfaction.
As you play more and more, your mind starts racing and you feel good for achieving. And suddenly you realise two things.
Life is a game, and success is the way to play it.
You may or may not play the game to the end. You may give up after a tenner, (personally i got up to something like 164.00, but my complete outlook on life changed.
Getting married, having children whatever it is, its success.
Put out a goal everyday, even a small goal, and achieve it.
Then you will know the answer to your question.

Biologically? To pass on our genetic code with advantageous traits that we 'learn' from our experiences on earth. (If you're interested in this, look up 'evolutionary psychology'), and also to pass on our gentic code from our sexual partner whom we produce children with - this is the point of living, to maintain life on earth. We are meant to hand pick people with traits that gaurantee our future childrens survival. (Good looks, honesty, skills/craft, intelligence, strength etc). Hence we 'fancy' good looking and strong people who are smart and funny, not ugly, weak people who are boring and self destructive. Annoyingly, most of us are the latter, not the former though, so most of this planet is full of idiots who become politicians, and yes, they're all men!

Spiritually? To see if we can learn anything from the gift of life, for it is a gift. We never asked for life, or purchased it in store. Life is a curse if we are born ill, and a blessing if we are able bodied and can travel, and experience the rich wonders planet earth offers us.

For those chronically ill, or sick/disabled? Life is a lot harder, and less pleasent. So here the point of living is a 'battle' maybe with a severe disability or in chronic pain. This (ironically) will be a positive genetic trait, the abilty to maintain mental health in adverse situations is advantageous to human survival, and thus would be a good thing to pass on in our gentic code - hence disabled/chronically sick people are useful to the gene pool too. One point, able bodied people aren't aware of how mentally 'tough' disabled people are, so they ignore the people who are sick, and go for the dippy ones who go down the gym! Ohh well.

Life is so hard fo many people, and so easy for the select few. We can only use what we are given, and no more.

We can only try our best, and hope the journey was worth it.
This is usually done by creating a family and making our childrens lives as good as possible, when (commonly) ours were not. We've all seen the pushy parent forcing their kids into sport/show business/academia. Although it seems unfair, it's simply a genetic trait that makes us (the human race) to want to better ourselves. So forgive these people, they mean no harm, they are simply desperate.

When all is lost, we have to think how lucky we are, that we have got this far. Some babies die before birth, or during, or shortly after. Children die too and youg people. These people never had a chance. They never experienced romance, sex, a family, work, their first kiss. This to me, is terribly tragic.

Say a prayer for yourself, and us all. Because on this planet we inhabit, we're all in need of love.

I'm pretty happy with my life, of course there are things I'd like to have that I don't. Not monetary, just people I love and care about.
I too wonder sometimes what the point of it all is. I have no idea why we are here, why I'm here...what the whole point to it is.
If you believe in God, why did he put us here? I'm so confused about all the things I think about...so I try not to even think about why, I just go day to day doing my thing. Trying to do good and all, but really in the end when it's all over, what was the point?

I don't see the point in living nor do I see the point in questioning it, if you're never going to know the truth about something why take your time to figure it out? Just live life to the fullest.

before i answer id just like to point out that just because shes asked this question doesn meen shes depressed or hates life! i think the point of living is to try and make other peoples lives happier and in the process make yourself happy.

There is no one answer to your question. Philosophers, scientists, and religious people have asked and answered this question for thousands of years.

The question is really, "Why are you asking?" Is your question philosophic, scientific, or religious?

Or are you feeling depressed? Mild depression is often self limited. It can disappear as a few molecules of neurotransmitters reach the right area of the brain. Eating chocolate, food, getting rid of a particular stress, or taking a pill can quickly change your attitude about life.

Talk more to someone about your feelings.

I ask the same thing every now and then and then comes along someone or something positive and changes my thoughts. Just hang in for a moment something will come along to make you want to see whats going to happen next.
