actually birthdays in any cultures are essentially special days.So irregardless of which culture you are from, if its your birthday it is a special day and a day of happiness.
so the answer to your question is tat culture is not important to birthdays

Yes, it is Cultural/Regional ... there are certain celebrations that may be important to you (as a person raised by your parents in your home nation) that do not have the same meaning for those individuals born in another culture or region.

So don't let it bother you ... just realize that he may 'celebrate' (or not) the birthday differently ... and you may need to help him understand why this day is IMPORTANT to you .... if there is someone else with a birthday BEFORE yours (that you know), tell your guy that you are both going to their 'celebration' with a small gift, etc. That way, he can learn some about your culture, and you can explain the significance of the date and how you look forward to your birthday every year too (and what you expect by pointing out the friend's birthday events).

Remember, he won't know how important something is to you UNLESS you can CLEARLY Communicate it to him ... otherwise you will be disappointed/upset and he won't understand why!

Yep, it's cultural. Chinese people don't make a big deal about their birthdays. The traditional way to count how old you are is by how many Chinese (Lunar) New Year's you've experienced. So if you are born a month before Chinese New Year, you become 1 year old after that month. And the "birthday celebration" concept just gets rolled into the big Chinese New Year celebration.
