Dan Quayle is/was a loyal Republican Party member, a pretty boy fop, an "empty suit" born into a very wealthy family. As such, he grew up under an umbrella of privilege. He was not smart enough to attend Ivy League college.

It is curious why George Bush Sr. selected him to be his Vice President running mate. There has been a lot of speculation about that. During a debate, he compared his experience to that of John F. Kennedy at the same stage in their political careers. Lloyd Bensten, the Democrats nomination for VP retorted: "I knew JFK and you're no JFK". The Democrats got a lot of campaign political mileage out of Quayle's gaffe. While VP, he embarrassed himself and his office by mis-spelling potato at a spelling bee at a grade school in Trenton, NJ. He mis-corrected a boy who had spelled potato correctly, telling him that it required an "e" on the end: "potatoe". It made front page news across America. I don't think that was as bad as Gerry Ford telling Jimmy Carter, during a debate, that Poland was a free county, when in fact it was a soviet block country squarely under the boot of USSR at the time. How could an incumbent president not know that? That serious gaffe probably cost Ford the election to Carter.

Once elected, George Bush, utilized Dan Quayle in important government matters to the least extent possible. Some say he was the least utilized Vice President in modern American history and he was "only a heart beat away from the presidency".

No, I don't think that he would have been a better President than George W. Bush and Bush is no scholar either.

possibly no longer. despite the fact that they're very comparable ideologically, Quayle is (or a minimum of substitute into) thinner skinned. he got here off as sheepish and embarrassed interior the face of the media's assaults. all of us remember how undesirable the information made him look while he wisely study that flashcard (little doubt concocted by some liberal educator). he might have referred to that the room substitute into packed with liberal journalists, none of whom caught the blunders on the time, yet as a substitute he allowed the media to extra or much less have their way. for the main section bush doesnt enable such unfair critisisms get under his pores and skin making him a extra efficient chief.

For the person ribbing Quayle for his spelling, at least I bet he can pass on with a clear conscience.

You are joking, right? Dan Quayle was an........oh well, if you can't say something nice. You know, when Regan was president, no one liked him then. It wasn't until later that all he did was appreciated. Same will go for GWB.
