At home I have DSL coming in to the house from the phone cable to a little box(i forget the name). The little box sends out the internet wirelessly and my computer picks it up.
Before I got DSL my computer would scan the area and access any unsecured networks in the neighborhood.

Interestingly enough my DSL came with instructions for encoding the wireless transmission and allowing only my computer to read it. I've noticed that my computer is picking up other secure networks in the area but cannot access them.
I have no need to. But...

Let's say I go to the library and I need to connect to the net and the only wireless networks are secured. HOW CAN I GET MY COMPUTER TO ACCESS ONE OF THE SECURE NETWORKS FOR THE DURATION OF MY STAY AT THE LIBRARY?.........i'd rather do this then pay an arm and a leg for a cellular card with slow loading times and other hassles.

If anyone thinks this is a no no please let me know!:-]

The reason that people secure the wireless is to keep uninvited guests out. So attempting to get in is illegal in every US State!. If you need access, ask the owner of the network for permission. They can give you the key!

Just for further information using any open network without the owners permission is also illegal.
Here are the state laws .

and here is why it is a bad idea even from your safety standpoint.

Usually the library will have an open connection
to connect to a wireless network that is secured, you must know the pass key usually wep or wpa
At the library, ask the person at the front desk
yes, you can hack the security, but this is illegal and highly inadvisable,

lol you can't find out passwords of encrypted networks. That is the point. They are encrypted specifically so that you cannot use them. If you're at a library or other place that has a network meant for public-access then it will be unprotected or you will get the password by asking an employee of the library, coffeehouse, etc. Other than that, trying to find out someone's encrypted password is like trying to find out someone's PIN number in case you have to use their ATM card... You could ask them. But they'll probably just glare at you and shake their heads.

Yes. Listen to what Steve said. It's most likely that you hit the switch on your laptop cutting the wireless signal off. Look for a wireless switch on your laptop (make sure your laptop is on before you hit the switch)

You don't. Now that you're paying for DSL, would you like it if someone were to discover your network key and freeload off you?
