you can disconnect the speed sensor from the transmission,on it,and that will stop it,but you will also get a check engine light and the cruise control wont work either, and its sort of against the law to do this, but that will stop it from working, good luck with it.

What make/model of car? Some take the signal directly by wire from a speed sensor, some use a conventional speedo cable and convert the signal inside the guage unit. If its fully electronic, and you can find a wiring diagram, and you know how to interpret the various components connected to the speedometer/odometer, you might be able to wire in a SPST toggle switch that will open the circuit when you open the switch. However, before you try that, remember:

> You may create a bunch of electrical system problems doing this
> Your speedometer won't work when the circuit is open
> Functions like cruise control, traction control and ABS probably won't work, and

> It's illegal as hell, and if this is a rental or lease car, they can tell you did it from the OBD box, and they WILL charge you

Besides the legality issue, if the vehicle is even remotely new (like 1992 or newer) which it probably is with a digital odometer, you can't just disconnect the speed sensor at the trans. The ECM uses speed reference for many things like torque converter lock-up, transmission shift points, engine idle, etc. Your vehicle just wont work correctly without it! By the way, the mileage in most new cars is stored in the body control module or ECM anyway, so even if you made it not show on the dash, the car still knows what the correct mileage is.

There is a speed sensor on the transmission, but if disconnected, a code will show up the speedometer has been tampered with. This could void any warranty you may have. Also many things are speed sensitive: Trans shifting, Power steering, Cruise control. Best to leave it alone

Why would you want to? You could unplug the speed sensor, but that would trigger engine problems and a check engine light at the very least. Along with odometer you would also not have rpm indicator or speedometer.

Don't do it. I believe it is a Federal crime to disconnect or reset the odometer without telling any future buyer the mileage of the car is unknown. This will also lower the value of the car.

Sounds like you want to commit fraud.

i almost answered this but then i read david p's answer. exactly. i did find a way to do this on a 2002 s-10 by putting switch b/w the ecm and the bcm, although i was trying to get rid of the speed limiter...didnt work but it had 5 less miles when i sold it. im sure other vehicles are different and wont respond well to that! It is absolutly illegal to that btw.

The way I do it is to coast as much aa possible with the ignition off..my commute to work milage can be halved...very hsndy if you have a limited milage lease or hire car...its illegal but then so is tampering with the odometer and this method will not show up on tests...because the milage is registered when ignition in actually on...
