Yes, provera is often prescribed to treat abnormal uterine bleeding. The purpose of the medication is to control and stop the bleeding.

As with any medication, it is only bad if it suffer from side effects or if you do not follow directions when taking it. Your age has no bearing. Be sure to notify your doctor immediately if you have any problems while on the medication and be sure not to smoke! This medication can cause blotchy skin when in the sun so be sure to wear sunscreen.

As for any other effects, the doctor would be the best one to help you since he has access to your entire medical history. Had the risks outweighed the benefits, he would have never prescribed this medication.
