How do you write music?

Question

I am working so hard to write music, I know what I want to write but can someone explain the mechanics to me? I play the guitar if it helps. I seem to be able to write what I want to say but the words and notes just don't seem to flow, can anyone help? I really need some tips

I play the piano, but maybe this can still apply:

When writing, I just play what I feel; I experiment with some notes and/or chords, and if it sounds good, I just keep going and eventualy a song comes out! Hope it helped.

I'm a drummer, but compose on either the 12 string or keyboard. I usually goof around with a chord progression until I have a structure. Keeping the melody in my head for days weeks even months at a time...till the hook comes (Chorus) then the verses are built around it. And some times the words come first but not often.

In addition to what the others have said, I'd recommend taking a songwriting class, if you can find one. Depending upon your age, check with your local community center, high school, college, adult education/continuing education center, places of worship, or "Learning Annex"-type places.

Bouncing your ideas off others, and hearing others' new songs, should help. Make sure you find a class that provides a nurturing yet truthful environment. Avoid put-down artists like the plague; they are dream-killers.

Stop trying so hard and just write what you feel, let it come to you and it will be right.

It depends on my moods...i can easily compose a song if I am down in the dumps..overcast....
