For example, inside the network I know you type 192.168.0.1 (or whatever happens to be the preset address for your router, sometimes 192.168.0.2 or another ip), but is there a way to do so from outside the network other than through a VNC or remote assistance? There may not be, for various reasons, but it doesn't hurt to ask... It would just make it easier for me to help configure my friends networks if there was.

Nearly all routers have a setting which will say "Allow Internet Access" It normally is off by default for safety reasons and normally you should run with it turned off. However, if you need to access it remotely you can enable remote access. You would then reach it by using the Internet IP - which the ISP assigns to the router. (You can usually view that from the routers status page.) On most linksys units you enable this from the Administration -- Management page. You can also change the port (default is 80) to some other port like 8040 so to access it you would use http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:8040 the xx is the internet IP! and that is a colon : before the port number.

If you do enable that setting be sure to set a very strong "Administrative Password" or it will be hacked within a few minutes (not hours!)

ahh well this is very simple so what you want to do is type on Google whats my ip or open your command prompt and type "ipconfig" and look at the default gateway so when you get either of those just type that in to your URL which is the place you type your site names so when you type that in you will be on your modem's page what you want to do is login for username type admin and for password just leave it blank log in if that does not work look on the back of your modem for a login and use that login for the modem so once u log in go on the settings then go to security settings there will be 2 passwords one for the internet which is the one you use to get access to the internet and the modem setup password which is the log in to what you using right now so just change that to whatever you want and you should be fine.
