I'm pretty use to wearing glasses, but I'm thinking about switching to contacts. But the thought of touching my eyes really scares me. Should I get them? If you have them, how was your first experience with them? Are they uncomfortable?

Hi Sl33py! I think there is no harm in trying contact lenses. Ofcourse your a little apprehensive because the first thing the eye does when something is pushed into it, is to shut, its one of the bodies defence mechansims. However, dont let this stop you. You will have to practice putting them in and taking them out. It will be a little uncomfortable in the beginning. However you will get used to it, and after a while you'll find you'll be able to whip them in and whip them out in a flash.

I recommend going to an optomistrist so that they can assess your eyes and give you a fitting as there is many types and sizes. They also will give you the right advice as to care and management of your eyes and contact lenses. Do not just order the contacts online without visiting an optomitrist first. Many people will write down their bad experiences with using contact lenses, however you have to factor in their own circumstances, whether they sought a optomistrist, whether they were hygenic in the care and management of their eyes and contact lenses etc etc. You will have no problems if you do it the right way.

Hope this helps you.

I have contacts, and let me tell you, they are a completely genius invention, especially since I play sports. I have found that you get used to having them in, and they are not uncomfortable at all. In fact, I would rather wear them then wear glasses (which I have, for times when I'm not wearing my contacts, which is rare). At my eye doctor's office, when I first got contacts, she wouldn't let me leave until she knew I could put them in without a problem. It took a few tries, but it is really easy. You don't have to touch your eye, you are just touching the contact, and if you focus on something else, you don't really notice it.

Good luck, and if you make the switch, enjoy!

After having worn glasses for 21 years I finally got contacts three years ago and I love them. It took me a few days to get to where I could get them in with no problem because they would want to stick to my finger instead of going on my eye and now I have no trouble at all getting them in. I perfer contacts any day over glasses because they don't fog up when it's hot outside like glasses and when it rains you don't have to take them off to dry. And I can wear sunglasses.
You should give contacts a try. Next time you go to the eye doctor tell him or her you want to try contacts and the doctor should give you a trial pair for you to use and see if you like before ordering you some.

I had contacts for about six months and then went back to my glasses. Before you commit yourself, make sure that your eyes tear enough to allow the contacts to move around. About 10 % of eyes do not and another 10 % are borderline. I was borderline but towards the dry side. As a result, the lens would float to the right spot upon putting it in, but then it would lock there as the tears dried up. About 4 hours later, I would be in terrible pain. The drops would help for only about 5-10 minutes. At one point, I was registered with Wills Eye Hospital in Boston and got to test prototypes of new designs. None worked. That lasted for about two years before I had enough.

Yes, there is something unnatural about poking yourself in the eye.

i tried them for the first time in 13 years a few months ago and i could not wear them due to allergies and such. putting them in your eye is nothing, you will get used to that. they are not uncomfortable. you can't even feel them. i wished i could have worn them and i may try them again someday.
