I want to dye a white prom gown pink for halloween. Its made of 100% polyester. Only thing it has 6 layers of the mesh (toile ????) fabric and a layer of satin and is covered in sequin beads. Do you think I can or am I just going to end up ruining the dress with a tye dye look??! I've seen people dye their slips for wedding dresses why would this be any different?! HELP??!!

firs t of all ; you might mess it up if you dot't know what you are doing we did the same thing to when i wasin high school; the drees is to heavy and has too many layers and polyester does'n take some dye to good satin is very fragile and your beads might fall off, this is taking a big risk and messing up your beautiful dress don't do it. take your dress to a dry cleaners and ask them to do it for you. you might spent some money but at least it will look nice on you and you won't end up crieing like me and my sister did i will not advise no one to dye a fine dress unless you really know what you are doing ask the expert in clothing. good luck and be bless. peace out.

No, polyester doesn't absorb dye, nor does it react to fiber reactive dyes. Natural fibers such as cotton, silk, wool, linen, rayon dye the best, and nylon is the only synthetic that takes to home dyeing. Also, sequins don't dye (usually) and beads don't dye either.
If it's for Halloween and you don't plan on wearing the dress after, then you might want to try fabric paint or fabric spray paint, from the craft store. The paint will make the dress stiff and it won't be a formal gown any longer, but you can make the outer layer pink-ish. The mesh netting -tulle by the way, a french word pronounced tool- might take the dye better than the satin, but overall polyester is a pain in the backparts to dye successfully, even for pros.

Polyester does not take to dye in a consistent manner. You are very likely to get a splotchy effect.
