Did you consider calling the manufacturer or checking the Gateway website? Most manufacturers have not only product specs but links to appropriate upgrades for almost any given computer they've produced. At the Gateway site you can input your serial number and it will show you the appropriate information for that model.

I didn't find an MT6542 model notebook but I did find an MT6452 at http://support.gateway.com/s/Mobile/2007/Oasis/1014362R/1014362Rnv.shtml

The various pages didn't provide any information as to whether or not the 2 slots would support 1GB SO-DIMMs and the only memory components indicated were the (2) 512MB sticks you already have installed.

However, on the page is an option to chat with or call a Gateway support rep so this could be one avenue. Another avenue is Crucial.com that lists a 2GB memory kit for the MT6452 at http://www.crucial.com/store/listparts.aspx?model=MT6452
and indicates that this model notebook will support a maximum of 2GB (2x1GB SO-DIMMs)

There is no MT6542 model from Gateway. But if you meant MT6452 You can upgrade to 2 1GB sticks of RAM which will give you a total of 2GB of RAM. Go to this link http://www.crucial.com/index.aspx and use the memory advisor tool. It will list all of the RAM types and sizes that you can put in your system. If you want to know more about your laptop go to this site http://support.gateway.com/s/Mobile/2007/Oasis/1014362R/1014362Rnv.shtml
