if you got a low power warning on the computer screen then it is not charging... otherwise it is currently charging and syncing. if you eject the iPod from itunes the screen will change to a battery which also means it is charging and it is safe to disconnect it then because the file system on the ipod is no longer mounted.

If you have an iPod Nano, try holding the top button down for 5 to 15 seconds to see if this turns off the screen. You need to be careful not to disconnect or you can really mess up the player. See if you can reset the system this way. If the message goes away, wait a minute and try turning on again. If this works you should be good to go. Good luck.

It think it automatically charges even if it says do not disconnect. Mine has been saying do not disconnect for the past hour already. Now it's completely charged.

I agree: it'd been MUCH easier if Apple software engineers simply placed "Charging" instead of "Do Not Disconnect", evidently to imply the device IS charging.
Chalk it up to one of many irksome phrases, courtesy of Apple and AT & T: Your World....Monopolized (no more).

In the corner of the screen there is a battery and there will be a lightingbolt in the battery when it is done sharging there will be a plug in the battery
