how about olives for the wheels? or cherries or grapes or (if you want to be creative and unneccessarily large) lemons. All of those would roll really well. use the toothpicks for the axels. Take a bannana peel, cut it to the appropiate size and stick it to the bottom of the car (there should be a loop big enough for the toothpick). Use a glue made out of flour and water to make the stick permanent. Then run the toothpick through the bannana peel and put the wheels on. Make sure the peel is glued tight enough so the toothpick won't fall out.
Hope that helps, good luck

Take along a few granola bars. I like the new sweet and salty ones from Planters, I think. A couple of those mozzarella string cheeses should do okay for a couple of days in your pack. Some fruit, such as apples and oranges. Raisins. Dried yogurt covered banana chips and trail mix. So, that's several food groups. Stock up on that stuff, and lots of fresh water, and you should be fine.

The toothpicks are for the axles?
BODY - Coco Puffs (light in weight)
TIRES - those round mints in the silver wrappers every resturant sells at the cash register. unwrap them and give couple/three days to get hard or dig to the bottom of that bowl and find the already crunchy hard ones. haha
*** if you think the tires will fall off rolling downhill then anchor the outside of tires with a gummy piece on toothpick end?
If you plan to get fancy -
gummy things to cut shapes for HEADLIGHTS and break lights
Twizzlers cut thin strips for where DOORS and windshield
This project sounds fun!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Non perishable?
I think pasta wheels would work for wheels.
No idea on the body though.
