With media mail, you can send:

- books
- sound recordings
- recorded video tapes
- printed music
- recorded computer-readable media (such as CDs, DVDs, and diskettes).

Maximum weight is 70 lbs. and the package cannot contain advertising. And yes, the Post Office reserves the right to check the package to verify whether the contents actually conform to the media mail guidelines.

Read about media mail from the USPS website http://www.usps.com/send/waystosendmail/senditwithintheus/mediamail.htm

The final answer to that would be what the post office tells you is officially 'media mail'.

Any package that comes through their hands that they even suspect might not be media mail, they have the ability to open and check, even after you've posted it. You have no privacy with that, they have new rules on the media mail. They can open it, and send it back to you and you can't complain that they violated your privacy.

Stop at any post office and just ask one of the clerks what's allowed to go under media mail. I know books, pamphlets, sheet music and most printed matter are fine. Video games are not. Decks of cards are not.
