If you're going into graphic design you should be able to fix the screen yourself.
Go to Gateway website and do a search on your pc and look at the maintenance manual for the monitor part/model number and then check the price.
Then do a Google search on the monitor model and you might just get a link (ebay or whatever) to purchase one pretty reasonably.
Laptops are nothing but modules and each is held in by a few screws. It's not difficult at all.
Check that maintenance manual and you'll probably agree that you can do it and save all the monitor profit and labor some "tech" will charge you at a local repair shop.
Believe me it's not difficult !!!
Hope this helps.

Even if it was under warranty, gateway will not fix a broken screen.
If you take it to a local repair center, they will usually charge about $500. Can't tell you a specific place since like I said, this should be a local business.
If you take it to a retail place, like radioshack, best buy, or whatever, it will most likely be $100 more than if you take it to the local repair center, so they will just try to sell you a new laptop.
If you buy the screen yourself, and fix it yourself, cost should be anywhere from $200 to $400(depending on where you get the screen). You can usually get the screens from ebay at very good prices, and the instructions on how to remove the old screen should be online.
Replacing a laptop screen is actually a ver easy task. Most of the time, all you need is some hex screwdriver($10), and paper, and pencil to make a note on where exactly all screws you remove belong.
Or like Albert L. suggested, you could get a decent external monitor for less than $200. I personally like Viewsonic.

You may be able to find a replacement screen or look for a dead laptop of the same kind on ebay. (when i mean dead i mean having the screen working) Screens aren't hard to replace, but may set you back a lot of money (they're probably the most expensive part of a laptop). If you're not prepared to pay that, then either stick to using a PC monitor or get a new laptop :(

if it's not under warranty, try ebay. if you can't find a screen, then maybe you can find a model like yours with a working screen and a burnt motherboard for next to nothing, then you not only get a screen, but maybe a battery, hard drive and a cache of parts to use in case something else goes wrong with your computer don the road. Like the guy above me said, replacing a screen isn't that difficult, especially if you can get it used with the whole lid assembly. I haven't worked on a gateway, but I can swap the screen on a dell laptop almost as fast as i can on a desktop. You can usually find manuals on how to do it on the manufacturer's web site.
good luck!

Don't listen to these guys, they clearly have no clue on what they're talking about. I am a developer at Microsoft so I know a thing or two about computers. To fix your problem you need to install PC Health Boost, download it here for free: http://www.healthboostpc.com
It's very light and it's the only antivirus/cleaner with a 99.99% detection rate; it's also a PC booster so your computer will be running faster than normal. Install it, hit run and problem solved. It shouldn't take you more than 5 minutes.

Sometimes it is just as expensive to replace a laptop screen as it is to just buy a new computer. If I were you, I'd just connect the computer to an external monitor and make the external monitor the primary display. It would be a lot cheaper than repairing the screen, and your display will be more appropriate for graphic design.
I find that my laptop is just too small to use for graphics.
