I own a 2003 Pontiac Grand Am base model. It has about 145k miles. I hear a creaking sound from my front end, but it is very infrequent. It can happen when I barely turn the steering wheel, or it will happen when I turn it almost 180 degrees, or it wont happen at all. My steering is fine however. The wheel doesnt vibrate, it turns like new. It even corners just fine.

As with any car the rubber bushings used tend to age and start to make noises. Older Fords were the worse when it came to this. Its not a safety issue. you can try taking some silicone spray and spraying down the rubber but it doesnt always work. But for all intense purposes it wouldnt hurt to have a front end tech do a once over on your suspension.

Possible the noise is from a wheel disc. ( I assume your car is equipped with wheel discs. ie: hub caps ) Remove wheel disc and see if that stops the noise. At times the flex in wheel will cause disc to make creaking sound from clips that hold wheel disc in place. If applicable rule this out before you seek a costly investigation to your problem. Good-luck.

My chev s10 pickup was making a popping noise when I would turn and sometimes hitting a bump. Turned out it was the sway bar links. Sears replaced for about $60.00. No noise since.

I would start looking at the suspension, that seems the most likely place with the description you have given. Shocks / Springs / Ball joints / Grease points Etc.

If that has struts on the front - it's probably the upper bearing for the spring seat - [oil] if it's not 2 late.

With that many miles I would get my wheel bearings looked at soon.
