George Jones: He stopped loving her today

He said I'll love you 'til I die
She told him you'll forget in time
As the years went slowly by
She still prayed upon his mind
He kept her picture on his wall
Went half crazy now and then
He still loved her through it all
Hoping she'd come back again

Kept some letters by his bed
Dated 1962
He had underlined in red
Every single I love you.
I went to see him just today
Oh but I didn't see no tears
All dressed up to go away
First time I'd seen him smile in years

He stopped loving her today
They placed a wreath upon his door
And soon they'll carry him away
He stopped loving her today

(Spoken)

Ya' know she came to see him one last time
Oh, we all wondered if she would
And it kept running through my mind
This time he's over her for good

He stopped loving her today
They placed a wreath upon his door
And soon they'll carry him away
He stopped loving her today

There are a lot of saddest songs. I couldn't hope to narrow it to one.

Concrete Angel is great.
Pictures from Life's Other Side.
Teddy Bear.
I Dreamed about Momma Last Night.
The Bad Girl That Lives Down The Street.
The Night That The Lights Went Out In Georgia.

There are literally hundreds of good answers. Go back to the 50's and 25% of the songs written were tear jerkers. Listen to Hank Sr. 75% or his were in that catagory.

Elsworth ~ Rascal Flatts
Whiskey Lullaby ~ Brad Paisley (I love Brad, never a bad song!)
Concrete Angel ~ Martina McBride (the music video makes me cry a river, it is so sad)

I don't think anything has passed He Stopped Loving her today. Now if you listen to Porter Wagnor's version of Committed to Parkview it is right up there. It has to be his version though, the Highwaymen have it on their first CD with Johnny and Willie doing it but they are two very different versions. When you hear Porter's version it is a man who managed to get out and is reflecting on it, which seeing the video really makes it that much sadder.

I would say "The Green, Green Grass of Home". I'm not sure if Merle Haggard wrote the song, but he did sing it.
