A little bit of anime history in the US. When Harmony Gold got the rights for the original Macross saga from Japan and in order to release it in the US they needed 2 other anime series w/c have no connection storywise whatsoever and retitled it Robotech for US audiences. The 3 animes' are The Macross saga, Southern Cross and Genisis Climber Mospeada. Here's where the problem starts because they had to deviate from the original stories in order to connect the 3 anime's storylines hence you have Robotech. That is why the original Japanese animes stories differ from the english dubbed versions because they try to "Americanize" the characters in order to appeal to American viewers. This happened to the DBZ and GT series.

Yeah I do think this can be confusing for non-Macross fans. In general, the biggest difference is quality of songs. In the original Macross, Japanese had relationships with JVC Victor to produce actual songs for the cartoon. They hired singer/actor Mari Iijima to play Lynn Minmay and released a full album along side the cartoon as a hit. The Robotech American version used some sort of quick Karaoke with songs written in the backroom during breaks by the Harmony Gold staff.

Jason did an excellent job. About the only thing I can add is that Robotech was sanitized for the US market and all inappropriate scenes were removed from it. It's not a great surprise considering the age group it was intended for. I cannot fault Harmony Gold for what they did since it introduced me to the SDF universe but considering how much a fan you are do yourself a big favor and get a hold of a copy of Chōjikū Yōsai Makurosu. Hikaru (Rick) and Misa (Lisa)'s romance makes more sense along with Minmay's behavior. Also, if you haven't seen it yet, and especially if you enjoyed the music from the series, you will absolutely love Macross: Do You Remember Love? I highly recommend it.
