I have a 1990 Pontiac Sunbird with about 147,000 miles, but it's not the original motor, it's been replaced with one with 47,000 mls. supposedly...anyhow, I repaired the gaps in the exhaust leak problems with new pipes etc. Repaired all vaccum leaks it had two of them. Replaced the air cleaner also, and fuel filter a couple months ago. I haven't worked in a couple years...so I only drive about 300mls. per week around town to stores, gas, etc. With 1/2 tank of gas I put in two days ago, I went 6 miles to walmart, 4 miles to vet, and I'm nearly out of gas already...needle is just reading above "E" why? and what can I do to resolve this gas consumption problem?

First of all, you are not sure what you are getting for gas mileage! The fuel gauge is not that accurate.

Fill the tank! Note your mileage or reset your trip odometer. Drive the car normally. When the gauge is reading about 1/4 tank, fill the tank again!

Note the mileage and subtract your starting mileage (or just read the trip odometer) to get the mileage traveled! Divide that by the number of gallons that you needed to refill the tank to get your actual mileage!

I would bet that your fuel gauge is not accurate. If you actually went through a 1/2 tank of gas and only went 10 miles, you either have a fuel leak or someone has siphoned your tank and stolen your gas! A locking gas cap will stop that!

does the check engine light come on when U turn the engine on for a few seconds & then go out after it starts ?? Does the check engine light come on at all ? Does the engine go into CLOSED Loop ? Have U had it checked with a scanner ? Does it run to cold ? etc.etc.
