when you buy the pieces of them at the store or you eat them at a restaurant?

I am not a vegetarian. So please no insults? I ask the Q bec I wonder if most of us are so out of touch with the natural world we don't think or care anymore about the animals we eat for food?

I was surprised to see the degree of awareness despite the disconnect with having to obtain your meat alive and having to kill it. No one was totally clinical about it though some were on the verge of being philosophical. I hope nobody is offended by my pick of the BA.

I live in the country. When I first moved to the mountains we had no jobs and no money. We accidentally hit a deer with the car and it died. We went and got a book on how to butcher it, I didn't have a clue. I'm a woman and feeding the kids was my number 1 priority. I was sorry the animal died but I was glad to have that meat. There wasn't much in the way of help back then, no food stamps.
The cycle of life is real, carrots were alive once too. I thank God for the food I receive and those who supplied it (including the animals and plants) and am happy to have it to sustain me. But as to your question, I think you are right. I think a lot of people do not think about where their food comes from or how blessed we are to live in a country where food is bountiful.

It's about time you realized Michael H. Yes you need meat. To answer your question, mostly you need the bones, the fat, and if you can keep some of the hair on you steak, that will really improve your health. Yes I'm being sarcastic. Lol! You do not need meat to survive at all. But of course you already know that. Meat doesn't have anything that you can't get from veggies, beans, and grains. Edit: You might want to think about the crow's answer. Has being a vegetarian affected your appearance? I mean have you always been a chicken or did you turn into one after becoming veggie? :P Lol lol lol!!!!! All vegetarians I know look as normal as other people, if not better and healthier. Edit 2: Don't change a thing Michael. You're a very handsome chicken!!! ;D

I gotta admit. I don't sit at the table thinking of it.

But I think about it when I watch programs of how
they get from pasture to my plate.
I use to eat Veal cutlet until I found out how they make it.

It's not so much that we eat the animal that 'lived', but the way
they are treated before being packaged for consumers.
Maybe if I keep that in mind, then I CAN break away from meat. I tried, but got too lazy.
I eat pork, chicken and seafood.

Thanks for the question. Makes me think again :)

Your q is a bit hypocritical. If you think about it, we kill things everyday for our benefit or survival. No one goes crazy when we pick cotton and make clothing out of it or eat a salad that has a tomato in it. A lot of things are created the same way. A seed is fertilized and grows to fruition wether it takes a breath or not. Just because something didn't breathe doesn't mean it didn't live.

Quite often I will refer to what I am cooking that night as 'pig, cow etc' and the common names such as chicken, lamb etc so yes I do think as them as an animal that once lived. These animals are 'produced' for consumption and sustain us in life. I have no difference of eating animal flesh for my own nourishment to obtain the minerals and vitamins they contain.

I definitely realized they once lived, especially when you learn about the way they actually kill these animals, I only eat chicken and fish, and its better for you not to eat beef or pork plus I have cows and pigs and I feel bad thinking of eating them.

I don't think about it to be honest. I know where the meat comes from but I also know that I want to eat it and it is good for me so I just accept it. I am grateful for them but there is no point thinking about it as humans will always eat them.

I am not out of touch. I think of it all of the time, but what can you do?

Meat is the main reason humans are intelligent. A large abundance of protein, which is what is needed for a brain to evolve.

I realize that they once lived.

I think it's odd that we are actually eating cooked muscle.

I also think its kinda odd that we put down other cultures for eating different meats (cats, dogs, etc) and we eat cow which other culutres think is sacred. Since when did we become some narrow minded.

um...I just had my 6 and 8 year old daughters clean some whitewings and quail last night, we are well aware where our food comes from and appreciate the fact that our lives depend on the sacrifice of these animals.
