I am 37 weeks pregnant with my second child. With my first baby I woke up in the middle of the night with SEVERE contractions, drove to the hospital (I was in such pain I could not sit down during the contractions), and was dialated to 8 cm by the time I got there soooooo no drugs were allowed. I was exhausted and gave up at the end. I don't want that to happen this time, so I am taking drugs. However, I will not not not have an epidural because I am terrified of messing with my spine. So please tell me the name of the drug and what it did to you, side effects of it, ect. THANKS!

Stadol is a really good drug during labor and delivery. I did not have any side effects and it took the edge off the pain and actually made me feel really happy and at ease. It was WONDERFUL!

i felt the same way about an epidural but when it came to it i found it to be the best thing ever

if it is fitted before your labour gets out of control then the potential to damage your spine is very minimal - and all that is needed is to get it topped up from time to time

i had to have an emergancy epidural which was higher risk but other than an odd twinge now and again for a few months i had no long term effects

I had Stadol with my first and puked after the birth - horrible!
I had 3 epidurals - the first 2 were WONDERFUL - and the 3rd didn't take right - I basically gave birth with no pain meds and WISHED I would have used nothing!

If you can - try to go it all natural - you bounce back so much faster and you won't puke. Other than that - I have no recommendations - this comes from a mom of 5!

http://www.painfreebirthing.com/english/welcome.htm. is a good site for this. In australia they have a needle i think that was pethadine and gas. I had those and the epidural. I cant remember what the needle did to me but it helped a little the gas made me very doopey inbetween contractions. The good thing about the gas was it helped me breathe which was good for me because everytime i had a contraction I would hold my breath. Which is not good!

Talk to your doctor ahead of time. Very few people get to request their drug.
Ask the doc what medication he uses for pain, and why. Then do a bit of research on it.
[You may make the staff a bit suspicious if you know too much about drugs, and aren't a health care person.]

My doctor told me it was better not to use narcotics since they do pass to the baby. It was too late for an epidural so I chose to suffer a bit longer lol.

I am a CNA in a small rural hospital and the drug of choice there is called the "paradise shot". It can make you sick afterward though.

hmm, I don't know. I had an epidural and loved it, I felt nothing. I had no pain during or after the birth.

Demoral and Stadol is the only other two I know of through an iv instead of epidurals...

FYI... Any IV drug will cross the placenta meaning the baby will feel the effects. If it puts you in la la land it will do the same for the baby. Not a good thing in my humble opinion
