Colombian, Argentinean ,Chilean, Bolivian, Panamanian, Mexican, Canadian etc.

GABRIELLE.... Patagonia is at the southern tip of South America, no where near Canada..... No offense intended but youre worng.

If you travel to Europe, do you say that your "American"? Normally an American would. People from South America dont. My wife refers to herself as Colombian, my friends refer to themselves as Canadians and even a few Peruvians. Its a non issue.

People need to get over being annoyed when we refer to ourselves as Americans. Our country is "The United States of America."

Mexico is "The Republic of Mexico." Do we demand that they call themselves "Republicans"? No, of course we don't.

"American" is appropriate because the word "America" appears in our nation's official name.

They all need to get over it, they really do.

That guy has no idea of the actual world. His social studies teacher put something in his head and now it is "FACT FACT FACT!!!"

As I stated to him:

Now, while you are correct that anyone in the "Americas" are "American" you must take into account that which the world VIEWS as American. Perception is everything.

America is a common label for those from the United States. Brit, is a common label or those from the United Kingdom. The Irish, Welsh and Scottish are all part of the United Kingdom as well, yet we do not call them "Brits" to we?

Did you know that the ACTUAL names of countries are usually not what we know them as. Take, for example. Finland, Its official name is the "Autonomous Province of Finland"

Or Australia. It's full name is "The Commonwealth of Australia"

India is actually "The Republic of India"

Saudi Arabia is actually "The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia"

France is officially "The French Republic"

Germany is officially "The Federal Republic of Germany "

Do you see what I'm getting at? The world percieves these nations as "Germany" or "France" or "India" but their actual names are not the same. Just like the world perceives the U.S. as America even though our official name is The United States (of America.)

You see, while citizens of other nations MAY technically be "Americans" it is not in the same sense as we are "Americans." What else can we be called, United Staters? No. Just like the Canadiens are Canadiens and the Mexicans are Mexicans, we are Americans.

Huh? Where is the question. Are you aware that your question is against Community Guidelines because it is nothing more than a rant about your feelings and that there is no question present.

The United States of AMERICA has always been called AMERICA. Your wife's original countrymen would be called COLOMBIANS. What is the problem?

The only problem is the perceived one of which people (the elite) are trying to destroy the United States cohesion and trying to turn US citizens against their heritage. Why? So they can easily create the North American Union without much uprising of the US citizens.

No, America is not the name of any country. Anybody from Patagonia(a region) to the northernmost region of Canada has the right to refer to himself /herself as an American.

The Spanish (who were the first European settlers in both continents)to this day say America to mean either continent in a generic sense, such as in:

´Oh,so your wife is from America?¨

to which you would reply,¨Yes,from Colombia.¨

The English speaking world is not the only reality. Other cultures exist and there is nothing wrong with pointing this out. I didn't think it would actually make people angry!

Everybody got on my back for nitpicking but it has been the only question to which the answers came in fast and furious..something like 25 in about as many seconds.
I have often asked more important(?) questions and received about 2 replies in as many hours!

I don't speak Arabic so I do not know what Saddam said about the impending U.S. invasion. If he had been speaking in Spanish he would have said ¨ Vienen los estadounidenses. ¨

In WW II the ENGLISH said, ¨The Yanks are coming.¨ which probably warmed the cockles of every heart south of the Mason Dixon Line, right?

Add. Notes
Of course Patagonia is not in Canada. I will not suggest that you do not know how to read. I will assume that you simply did not pay too close attention :
...FROM Patagonia( the southernmost American region, NOT a country) all the way up to the northernmost reaches of Canada.....everything falling in between is America.

To answer your question the truth is that I don't know. I do know that Farsi is spoken in Iran(the old Persia). I believe Saddam Hussein was a Suni and NOT a Chiite( the ethoreligious group which have the ties to Iran). So perhaps he didn't speak Farsi? Whatever he said,be it in Arabic,Farsi,Spanish(!!??!) or English it was probably unprintable.

SCUBADOG and all the rest of you;I hate to tell you guysbut most of you are wrong and gabriella is right. That dude
knows what she's talking about. I was stationed in Portugal for many years and in the Spanish speaking and Portuguese speaking world it is not a foregone conclusion that "America¨only means the United States. Many Spanish and Portuguese have told me that they have family in America or business relations with America and later specify Brasil or Mexico or Cuba or whatever.
We have appropriated the name America as only meaning us but our official name in the constitution is UNITED STATES and when we are at the Olympics we don't chant ¨America¨,we chant ¨U.S. A.¨

I don't know why there are so many replies from upset people. gabriella just stated the truth,America is not the name of our country and you can scream about it till the cows come home but it isn't!
Imagine if the Chinese referred to themselves as Asians and objected to the use of this term as meaning 'people from the continent of Asia' and only recognised it to mean people from China!!!

I know people from Venezuela South America. Also in Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, Colombia, Canada, Chile, USA, etc. and I think that, certanly, America it is a whole continent and Americans are all the inhabitants from Canada 'till Argentina, yet, so are the people who live in the USA. e.i. people from Venezuela are Venezuelans but also Americans. and People whom lives in the USA should be call Americans. I don't se no problem, none whatsoever in people from USA being call Americans.

Being that The USA is the only Country with AMERICA in it's names, we can accurately call ourselves AMERICANS. I just wish that AMERICANS would lose the dividing things they like to attach to it. We're one Country and one people and we have to get past these things that some are using to divide us.
