depends on the state, however...
if no one in the family line can pay for anything, they can help the family apply for assistance from the local (state or county) govt for a paupers burial - for example here in dallas, texas if they cant pay, dallas county will pay the funeral director to cremate the body and then pay for an unmarked grave... where the grave is depends on whose turn it is... basically all memorial parks take a turn in providing unmarked graves to the indigent... so there is no funeral, no headstone, you wont even know where the body ends up... but it is taken care of

In New York when this happens they send the body to a place called Potters Field.....they are put in a wooden box and stacked on top of other poor people who can not afford to pay for burial.....once there the family of the deceased can no longer view the grave they are given a number to keep.....sad but true

The body can be donated to a hospital for scientific research. If the family does not have money they can apply to the county for burial assistance, usually in a special part of specific cemetaries.

Well, if the person has life insurance the funeral director will take some of that to pay for the costs. If not it'd be up to the family to pay. If you can't spend that much money the most the director will do is just get the body cremated and will bring it to your house.

I've always heard that they get buried in a public cemetery for poor people. They use a cheap box, stacked one on top of the other.
