Would it kill you to read the Wikipedia link I gave you? Doesn't it say something about the quality of an answer when someone can cite a reference? You also might try clicking on the profiles of the people who answer to see how well they answer other dance-related questions.

By the way, since "So You Think You Can Dance" never used the term "modern" to describe one of the categories of styles that they used, you can't really use that show to get a good feel for the nature and scope of modern dance. They used the term "contemporary" and all the music they danced to was comprised of pop tunes with lyrics. So to the extent that they presented "modern dance," it was more the MTV-version of modern dance, which is just part of the whole century-long spectrum.

I have been taking modern for 6 years and my modern teacher has choreographed all over the world. Modern was created when a lot of people became tired of ballet's strict lines, positions, steps and music. Modern is a combination of contractions, releases, falls, off balance steps, jumps, runs and many other things. Modern is similar to both lyrical and contemporary dance styles. Don't let anyone tell you it is hip hop.

Modern dance at a studio is somewhat of a "modern twist on ballet" as you said before and has absolutley nothing to do with hip hop. Studio modern is usually either Horton or Ghram techniques if you wanted to do some research, but it has ABSOLUTLEY NOTHING to do with hip-hop.
