My son is almost 12 wks. old. He has been alittle backed-up for over a week. The last movement he had was much more than a baby his age should have (texture wise). He had one today..it was not much, but when I went to change his diaper, There was a strong chemical like odor..( I about fell out! hahaha) But on a serious note, The smell was not normal...So I think..Has this happened to anyone else and any advise would help! Also I noticed he is cutting a tooth, could this be the reason...THANKS!!

We need to know, formula fed or breast fed?
Breastfed babies can go a week without have a BM. It's normal, as long as when he does go it's still soft. Warning, it will be a lot and it will smell.
My breastfed baby's gas and poops smell AWFUL, always have. They don't bother him, but it can clear his dad from the room!

Hello! I have a 9 month old, and have used both prunes (after 4 months) and karo syrup (when he was just a few weeks). Both were recommended by the pediatrician, and both worked great. Just a teaspoon of Karo in a few bottles a day until he went was all it took. After his initial constipation was resolved, I put a teaspoon in one bottle a day to keep things moving. It worked well! He hasn't had any major issues since beginning solids. If he goes a day without pooping, I just give him some baby food prunes in the morning.
As for the chemical smell, it sounds like diarrea to me. I noticed a smell in my little guy's diapers when he was about 4 weeks old. I didn't know what "normal" was, since at that stage, it changed all the time! When I took him in to the Dr., he told me it was diarrea. My nephew gets a "chemical" smell too, occasionally, when he has diarrea from a milk sensitivity. If the chemical smell continues, I would check with the doctor just to be sure. He may be having a reaction to something in the milk, or he may have a little tummy bug. Listen to your gut though. If you sense a different, acidic kind of smell, something is probably a little off. Good luck! :)

BM's on babies vary just like adults. I've had babies that went 10 times a day and some that only went once a week to 2 weeks. I breastfed all of them, and only my last 2 smelled so rank...enough that daycare was asking me what I ate all the time (I eat ALOT of veggies)....lol.
You could call the pedi if you're concerned. Just remember, if he seems happy and isn't struggling to go then I really wouldn't stress to much about it.

Too much protein will do that. Are you nursing? It could be what you are eating. Asparagus will make the smell HORRIBLE! Chocolate can cause gastro-intestinal problems. Are you eating a lot of any one thing? You should cut that from your diet and see if baby gets better.
If he has good skin color and isn't colicky or has a temperature, then he should be OK. Make sure he is hydrated! It's OK to give a baby good drinking water, as long as his weight is maintaned.

If you're breatsfeeding it could be something you've eaten that your baby has reacted to. It could simply mean he has an upset tummy, or a reaction to being constipated (this has happened to both my babies). You're best seeing a pediatrician because he could have some sort of allergy / intolerance...my eldest daughter has a dairy intolerance and her poos were very chemical like in odor before I got her diagnosed. Seeing a doc to check is always best - if its nothing then you can rest assured but if it's something then at least you'll know! Good luck.

well, i'm not sure about the odor but i do have a couple suggestions to get him to have more bowel movements...my son had the same problem when he was about that age and his doctor told me to give him 4 ounces of water w/ a tablespoon of karo syrup(hope that's the correct spelling) i know its at any grocery store. also, it may seem gross but my mother would put the rectal thermometer in my son, like she was taking his temp and it would immediately make him go! it was crazy! she said she used to do it with all her kids and really always works. hope this helps!!

Give him some watered down apple juice. Contact his doctor and let him know what is going on.
