Forst make sure the connections are tight at the battery, and clean of corrotion.

Then check the ground wire from the battery to make sure they are tight, and a good ground (not rusted)

Next check the starter wires that they are tight and not corroded.
Then check all other wire connections behind the alternator.

I would test the alternator for charge, and finally the car for a power draw.

You cannot charge a dead battery with the car's alternator. If that's what you are trying to do, it will never work. If you're using a regular battery charger and the battery won't hold a charge, then you need a new battery.

If you want to know why it won't hold a charge, it could be a few reasons. As batteries age, the plates build up a sulfate coating and that prevents them from accepting a charge. As that sulfated coating flakes off and drops down to the bottom of the battery case, it builds up in a pile. If the old plate material touches two plates, it creates a short and that cell is now dead.

it's time for a new battery if it won't charge or if the battery is good your alternator needs replaced, you need to have the battery checked out to make sure it's good.

If you remove the plus and minus connections from the battery terminals (remove minus/ground first) and hook a charger to it, and it won't take a charge, the battery is faulty. You will have to replace it.

you may have a dead cell. many auto part stores will check it out for free . this is common if the car sits for long periods or in extreme heat . you can also check if it is at the proper water level

Probably a dead cell. Take it to an auto store and they will try and charge it, if it doesn't they can tell you why.
