Too many question marks!!!!!!!!!!!

I like Keith Moon best. He had a unique style of drumming, especially in songs like 5:15. Also, he was such a powerful drummer, and definitely wasn't afraid of ripping up his drum set. Yet with all this powerful drumming, he could keep the right rhythm, which is basically the job of the drummer.

Honorable mentions:

Ginger Baker of Cream
Mitch Mitchell of The Jimi Hendrix Experience
Neil Peart of Rush
Ringo Starr of The Beatles
John Bonham of Led Zeppelin
Vincent Colaiuta of Frank Zappa
Terry Bozzio of Frank Zappa

There will always be better technical drummers here and there but as far as making the biggest impact in rock it indeed has to be Neil Peart.

Neil Peart is fantastic. But with his recent heart problems, he's showing signs of aging in his playing. I saw Rush at Massey Hall in Toronto around 1975 or so, front row. Neil blew me away! Then I saw them a couple years ago and I wasn't impressed. He could still play, but nowhere near what he used to be capable of. He seemed to rely on a lot of gimmicks. I saw him a few years back before his health problems when he was doing his 'Buddy Rich' tribute, and he was incredible:

All the answers here are terrific, and pretty much sums up my favorite rock drummers. Although I feel Aynsley Dunbar should be in there too. He played with everyone from John Mayall's Blues Breakers, Frank Zappa, Michael Schenker, White Snake, and even pomp rockers 'Journey'. There 1st three albums are awesome by the way. Every 70's prog/hard rock collection isn't complete without them. Sadly Journey turned into a wimpy chick band by the late 70's.
Keith Moon was spectacular! And you must remember that Keith made all that noise without a hi-hat!
'Carmine Appice' of Vanilla Fudge, Cactus, and Ozzy Osbourne deserves mention here as well. He is a ferocious player.
There were several other lesser known rock drummers that could make some of the better knowns look rudimentary.
Check out John Hiseman from the bands Colosseum, Colosseum2 and Tempest. He would be in my top 5 for sure!
John with Colosseum, great solo:

John introduces 'TheValentine Suite' at the bands reunion back in the 90's, great drum solo here also! Check out Dave Clempson on guitar. For those of us old enough to remember, he went on to replace Peter Frampton in Humble Pie back in the early 70's.

Or how about B.J Wilson, the drummer from Procol Harum?
He was incredible too. He was actually Jimi Pages first choice for Led Zeppelin:

Niel Pert from RUSH #1 then Lars from METALLICA. The 2 best drummers out there right now. But don't forget about Peter Criss and Scott Rockenfield.

Jose Pasillas. I do agree Neil Peart is a great drummer, but it is time to replace him. He is getting so old.

Ringo Starr was pretty amazing. I saw a film of him playing at some ridiculously slow speed (like 25 bpm) and his timing was bang on the money. That my friend is very hard to do.
