No. if it were calm enough, the log would slowly rotate so it pointed north south. But the magnet has a north and south pole and each attempts to align with the local magnetic field - there is no net force north.
It is a common mistake to say the north end of a compass points or is pulled north - while that is somewhat true, the whole compass is reacting to the local field, not just the north end.

no because the magnet has 2 ends one is north and the other south. those 2 pulling forces cancel each other, but one head turns to north and the other to south ;)
