This is kind of weird, but there was a surge in brown recluse spiders in my area recently, and a friend, whose husband is a pest control expert, said to put chestnuts (yes, regular chestnuts) all over the place, inside and out, in baskets by the door, on windowsills, etc. For some reason, this actually works! All spiders, but especially brown recluse spiders, hate chestnuts. If they are in your house, they will depart, and if they haven't made it in, they won't come in. Be careful for the first couple of days if you have good weatherstrips on your doors, because they will be trying to get into the cracks to get out. Spray a pest killer around the cracks of each door and window(I use a "fresh scent" Raid), open every door and window twice a day for a week (to let out the stubborn ones), and that will get rid of your spider problem. As far as keeping them away from your house, I have decorative pots, window boxes, etc, that I grow things in, or have put silk flowers in, and I put chestnuts at the top of these pots. I haven't seen another spider, let alone brown recluse, near my house, and I had several, being near the woods. No more spiderwebs! It's been wonderful, and I've been using this remedy for about three months. I hope this helps you!

Bug Bomb everywheres in the house. It may not kill the spiders, but it will kill their food. Look for cracks and crevices where they can get in and seal them up. Put chestnuts all around. Spiders are said to hate chestnuts. Wear long sleaves and gloves when working in areas that normally go undisturbed. (basements, closets, woodpiles)
brown recluse is found in the United States from the east to the west coast, with predominance in the south.
An adult spider is 1/4 to 3/4 inch in body - a dark violin shape is located on the top of the leg attachment region with the neck of the violin pointing backward toward the abdomen. Unlike most spiders that have 8 eyes, the brown recluse has 6 eyes arranged in pairs - one pair in front and a pair on either side.
They like dark, quiet places. They are very aggressive when disturbed and their bite can be deadly. Seek medical attention imediately if bitten!
Good Luck :-)

I was bit by a recluse on the ankle, the skin was burned off immediately and it looked wicked. I did go to the doc, gave me an antibiotic for infection and put a gauze pad on and away I went. The diabetes issue..........just keep a close eye on the area around the bite, make sure the skin is coming back,no infection stuff like that. I think she will be okay, I want to thank you for caring so much about your grandma, you don't see that too much these days.........you are special, take care.

Theres really no way to prevent spiders from coming in the the house - the only way would be to make sure there are no cracks in the foundation, fill in all cracks in the house, seals etc.
Had to buddies that got bit by these - very ugly bites.
